My Story

JANE-76.jpg

Hi, I'm Jane and I’ve been in a long-term relationship with Pilates for about 25years. We first met when I was a teenager and I was dancing at my local studio. We dated for a few years but it never amounted to anything serious. When we met again right after University, it was a serious crush. We were going steady for a good few years before life kind of took over, and we drifted apart. A few years later however, we rekindled our affair and this time I jumped back in with both feet and decided to train as a teacher.

I started studying Pilates at Vancouver Pilates Centre with Dianne Miller and Mairin Wilde. My first comprehensive teaching certification was with Marta Hernandez through The PhysicalMind Institute, and my second was with Matilda Christiansen at Pilates from the Centre in North Vancouver

I am very grateful for my formal introduction to the Method with Vancouver Pilates Centre, and subsequently the base that my first certification with PhysicalMind gave me; however, my passion for this practice exploded in 2015 when it became my lifeline after injury pulled me out of my dance career and I began to study Classical Pilates (Boulder/Romana lineage) infused with Franklin Method with Matilda in North Vancouver.

Within this studio community, I leaned into both my rehabilitation journey and a desire to deepen my teaching practice. I studied as I healed and 18 months later I emerged with a second teaching certification. I was stronger and healthier than I have ever been despite ongoing body challenges, and I had come to the personal understanding that I was going to slowly close the door on my dance career, and let Pilates and all forms of movement-based rehabilitation and cross-training become my world.

Pilates has been and continues to be many things for me. In some pretty dark times it was a physical practice I could turn to and a community I could be completely vulnerable inside of. In one of the hardest transitions of my life, it gave me a sense of identity and purpose when dance could no longer fill that role. To be honest, it has been like glue in my life, and I don’t just mean holding my body together, but helping to strengthen my mind, build up my self-confidence and embrace me when I fall apart. The practice is incredible and the people I have met through my study and in the sharing of this work have been lights in my life and have helped to shape who I am today, just as dance did for so many years before that.

As a teacher, I offer the culmination of a life in dance, having spent 35 years immersed in thinking, talking and embodying movement through that lens. I have spent thousands of hours studying and practicing Pilates, and my continued learning includes building a deeper understanding of fascia, biomechanics, and the nervous system. The teachers and practitioners whose support has been the most meaningful to me, have been humble, endlessly curious and authentically themselves. I strive to stay as present, open and honest as they are.

If you're looking for me outside the Studio you'll find me immersed in a creative project, playing outside, or spending time with my beloved furry roommates.
